Materials on the Catwalks: Destroyed Denim - Fall/Winter 2016 (Geraldine Wharry)

Published
Apr 19, 2016

The mend and make do aesthetic seen on the Fall Winter 2016 Catwalks and echoing our  Modesty Solutions forecast informs frayed and weathered denim treatments.

Destroyed surfaces and silhouettes spearheaded by Marques Almeida a few seasons ago are now influencing emerging designers at a global level. Displayed in extreme overlayering and rawness, we are seeing this as a strong current with influential talents such as Mihara Yahusiro, Sean Suen, Andrew Combra  and Thomas Tait.

There is a curated approach to how the rips are applied to denim classics. Rips have a waterfall effect whilst circular holes are spread across the garment forming polka dot patterns. Rips become an allover embellishment.

Faded and sanded areas of denim rider jackets create intense contrasts. Destroyed denim looks also take on a playful quality with silhouettes patched back together like dolls. Multiple garments create a stacked illusion as seen in Duran Lantink x Jan Hoek’s collection, whilst 69’s collection opted for a friendly monster denim mask.
