Yarn Trends - Autumn/Winter 2022-23 (Fashion for Breakfast)

Published
Sep 6, 2021

Things are picking back up again from our research in yarns, to start off with the fundamental trends in raw materials.
After Pitti Filati, the international standard-setting Florence-based show for yarns and knits, finally returned in-person, the Collezioni Filati event was also held in Carpi, which brought together sales reps of Emilia Romagna and earned itself the ranking as the most important event in the field of yarns and research.

In particular, today we will analyse some of the yarns that, precisely during these events, proved to be the most interesting for the A/W 22-23 season. In the hopes that in-person shows and industry events like these are a sign that the fashion world’s long awaited relaunch is here.

Starting with bouclé: a patterned yarn that, for the upcoming winter season, will become even more colourful thanks to shaded and multicolour prints or two-colour effects for a salt and pepper finish. With large gauges the achieved result is that of astrakan faux fur, perfect for oversize knit coats.

But during the shows many slubbed or malfilé yarns were presented, that therefore feature typical alternating irregularities. With larger gauges and generally natural compositions (such as mohair, alpaca or wool blends) there are also twisted versions with lurex or with insertions of contrasting colour yarn, suitable for accentuating the characteristics.

The trend of prints continues in the world of yarn trends, and the possibilities that they offer are truly numerous. For example we have tone-shading that creates only a slight shadow of colour, or very subtle striped effects that accentuate the softness.

This season also features plenty of multicolour “sprayed” effects that are slightly reminiscent of a modern tweed effect, obtained thanks to small spots of colour. Printed yarns also fall into this category, which are then twisted with a solid-colour garment: the new version of mouliné.

For the A/W 22-23 season buttoned garments are coming back with a vengeance. Some have a very gauzy effect thanks to mohair or alpaca, which make the tweed effect more misty and fuzzy, while others are neater and more defined, with contrasting buttons.
