CanopyStyle celebrates second anniversary

Published
Dec 21, 2015

Launched in 2013, the CanopyStyle campaign was launched to protect ancient and endangered forests, as these are under threat of clearcutting for production of rayon and viscose.

The company is now celebrating its second anniversary and has revealed a number of initiatives and gains since. When the campaign launched, there were no fashion brands with endangered forest free sourcing policies, and now there are 60. There are also fabric manufacturers dedicated to using recycled cellulose fabrics.

Each year, around 120 mn trees are logged for fabrics and around a third of those are from ancient and endangered forests. Canada, Brazil and Indonesia are home to some of the world's greatest ancient forests, but also lead the world in global exports of wood for fabric manufacturing.

Already, key viscose and rayon fabric producers like Lenzing, Aditya Birla and Sateri, which represent 35% of global viscose production, have committed to the CanopyStyle initiative. They are working with CanopyStyle to improve their sourcing.

CanopyStyle says it is thrilled with the momentum of the campaign, which has been "surprisingly powerful and fast." 2017 is the timeline the initiative and its design and brand partners have set for sourcing fabrics that are free from endangered forests.
