About 70% of Dutch consumers use a smartphone to buy Christmas gifts, the European Mobile Commerce Study by Mastercard has shown. The study says that increasing popularity of smartphone usage has to do with shift in purchase times, as many people choose to shop online during their free time during the week.

Of those using smartphones to buy Christmas gifts, 79% of Dutch consumers prefer to buy gifts from the comfort of the couch; 17% order gifts from bed, and 4% shop for Christmas presents from the bathtub. Other popular smartphone shopping moments are whilst waiting for public transport, which came in at 11%; during working hours, according to 9% of shoppers; and during lunch breaks, an option popular with 6% of shoppers.

When asked about why they choose to use their Smartphone for Christmas shopping, 37% of Dutch consumers cited speed; 22% said “one-click” ordering; 17% mentioned the easy navigation of smartphone shopping; and 10% said that the improved security is an important factor.

Clothing and accessories are the most popular of smartphone purchases, at 48%, followed by good and drinks at 39% and 29% for theater and cinema tickets.

The European Mobile Commerce Study by Mastercard was conducted by market research company Innofact in the following countries: France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Spain and the United Kingdom. Between 14 November and 19 November, Innofact interviewed a total of 18,174 people aged 18 and above via online panels in all markets (approximately 1,500 per market).
