Shonda Rhimes and Dove mark International Day of the Girl with new sisterhood program

Shonda Rhimes has teamed up with Dove to develop a ‘multigenerational sisterhood' that inspires confidence among women and girls.

The author, TV producer and screenwriter has joined forces with the beauty giant on the launch of the ‘Girl Collective,' which aims to challenge beauty stereotypes through honest, authentic and practical conversations. The new initiative is part of Dove's ongoing ‘Self Esteem Project,' which the Unilever-owned brand has been running since 2004.

"Six in 10 girls believe that to do well in life they have to look a certain way and that just shouldn't be," said Rhimes, who has been working with Dove for two years as ‘Chief Storyteller', in a statement. "Last year I participated in my first-ever Dove Self-Esteem Workshop and I was inspired by the power of women and girls connecting to tackle issues that impact so many of us. I'm proud to be a part of this remarkable community which illustrates the magic we can unlock when we work together to inspire change and build confidence."

Rhimes is not the only star member of the Girl Collective: musician SZA, transgender activist Jazz Jennings and viral dance group Syncopated Ladies are also involved in the project, as is the intimate apparel brand Aerie. The group participated in a conversational series in Los Angeles earlier this month to kick off the project, which was attended by multiple teachers from across the US. The educators were provided with Dove Self-Esteem Project training, designed for them to share with their students on the occasion of October 11, which is known as International Day of the Girl.
