Shanghai textile trade shows postponed

The Intertextile, Yarn Expo, Chic and PH Value shows, originally scheduled in Shanghai on March 10-12, have been postponed. FashionNetwork.com has learned that the Chic and PH Value shows, due to be staged at the same time, are likely to follow suit, and the various shows’ organisers are seeking the authorities’ approval for the events to be held on March 17-19.

Intertextile

“In compliance with the pandemic prevention and control guidelines for exhibition activities issued by the Shanghai Municipal Centre for Health Promotion, and after careful evaluation and discussion with relevant stakeholders, we have decided to postpone the three fairs to a later date,” said Wendy Wen, senior general manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd. The latter is the joint organiser of Intertextile and Yarn Expo with CCPIT-Tex, the textile industry’s sub-council within China’s Council for the Promotion of International Trade, and the China Textile Information Centre.

The announcement was made in the wake of the measures introduced by the Chinese authorities to limit travelling for the Chinese New Year festivities, on and around February 12. The mood in China at the start of the Year of the Ox is quite conservative health-wise, and the world’s largest textile/apparel trade fair in China’s most populous metropolis is conforming to the general climate.

On February 19, Shanghai downgraded its first “medium-risk zone” to “low-risk”, marking the end of the regional alert as a local Covid-19 outbreak was contained, with only 22 cases recorded since January 21, according to the authorities.

After cancelling the March 2020 edition, and holding an emergency session in Shenzhen last July, Intertextile (the show for fabrics and materials), Chic (apparel), PH Value (knitwear) and Yarn Expo (yarns and fibres) were able to stage a normal session on September 23-25 2020, welcoming nearly 73,500 visitors. The high turnout was hailed as an encouraging sign by the organisers. Beyond March 2021, the organisers are preparing to hold their next editions on August 25-27, since the National Exhibition Centre in Shanghai is unavailable on the usual dates.
