PETA in the UK has called out the brands and people that “have made big statements for animals in 2020” via its Fashion Awards, with it also highlighting the progress made by some major retail names.

It hailed Stella McCartney as having the Best Catwalk Moment for bringing an animal rights message to Fashion Week and said the Collaboration Award was won by Dr Martens and Marc Jacobs for their vegan link-up. The Most Wanted Award went to Telfar for its popular vegan leather bags.

And it said Valentino, Marks & Spencer, Next, New Look, and Uniqlo all banned alpaca from their collections that gained them the shared Progress in Retail Moment title.

The Progress in Luxury Moment title went to Mulberry, PVH Corp, Paul Smith, and SMCP Group, all of which banned exotic skins this year.

Other winners included Henrik Vibskov with the Best Down-Free Collection for its range of coats using Ecodown recycled-polyester filler; Faborg with the Innovation Award for Weganwool, which is plant-based; and Piferi, winner of the Vegan Luxury Award for its high-end vegan shoes.

It also gave former British Fur Trade Association CEO Mike Mosser a Change of Heart Award for his decision to shun the fur trade and join the Fur-Free Britain campaign. But it named Farfetch Villain of the Year for continuing to sell items containing Angora.

On the celebrity front, Catherine Zeta-Jones was hailed for her collaboration with Butterfly Twists on a range of vegan shoes and Queen Elizabeth II was lauded for going fur-free.
