New York may soon boast its own men’s fashion week

Following the launch of London first men’s fashion week in June 2012, it’s now New York’s turn to take the leap. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), which organizes New York’s fashion week, appears to have decided to join London, Paris and Milan on the list of fashion capitals for menswear.

No official statement has been made for the moment. But after months of rumors, the CFDA’s CEO Steven Kolb recently confirmed in the American press that the idea has been tossed around and is supported by the important relevant organizations in New York.

“We have enough designers who could be a collective of talent in both emerging and established that would make a strong statement for American designers. The Mayor, New York City and the New York City Economic Development Corp. are very supportive of our work around all the collections. And we have enough venues and locations around the city to hold it,” he said.

A dozen menswear collections have already been presented in New York, but as part of women’s fashion week. The idea now is to organize a fashion week that is truly dedicated to men, which could begin as early as July 2015 with collections for summer, just after Paris’ fashion week, and squeezing it in somewhere between January and February for the winter season.

It’s an idea that would surely once more disrupt the schedule for London, Milan and Paris with the very likely gathering in New York of several American brands.
