New York Fashion Week relocates to new venues

New York's glitzy, multi-million-dollar Fashion Week is moving downtown to two new venues, officials said Monday, having been booted out of Lincoln Center for causing disruption.

The fashion extravaganza, run by IMG Worldwide Inc, lost its five-year license on Lincoln Center after being accused of misusing Damrosch Park, where trees and perennial plantings were removed.

After a series of conversations with designers, show producers, journalists and partners, IMG confirmed the move downtown into two unique spaces, Skylight at Moynihan Station and Skylight Clarkson Sq., both venues from the Skylight Group.

"We're looking forward to reintroducing the industry to a showcase of creative talent, style and innovation that made the New York runways famous," said Mark Shapiro, chief content officer at IMG.

"Part of this showcase involves staying close to inspirational hubs for fashion, art and music, and we've found great new homes for that in Skylight at Moynihan Station and Skylight Clarkson Sq."

IMG said the locations in SoHo and Midtown will enable fashionistas to get to and from other show venues more efficiently.

An increasing number of designers already hold their catwalk shows away from Lincoln Center, selecting hotels, restaurants and other prominent buildings dotted across Manhattan.

The city had worked closely with IMG Fashion to find alternative locations for Fashion Week, which earns New York nearly $900 million, and which has been based at Lincoln Center since 2010.

"The fashion industry contributes so much to New York City, and I'm thrilled that New York Fashion Week will bring so much excitement and energy to its new homes," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

"My administration will continue efforts to ensure that New York City's working designers and manufacturers have the support they need to make it here, and continue to grow NYC as the fashion capital of the world," he added.

The spring/summer 2016 edition of Fashion Week will be held from September 10-17, IMG said.
