Moss Bros closes warehouse, halts online orders

Menswear retailer Moss Bros has stopped taking online orders to allow warehouse staff to follow Government advice and stay at home.

The announcement comes as other fashion retailers including Asos, Next and Boohoo come under fire for continuing to trade online amid social distancing rules.

Moss Bros said online trading will be halted "until further notice". All stores across the UK and Ireland have also closed to help limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The measures will have a significant impact on the company’s finances, on top of a “significant” reduction in footfall across its retail outlets and in orders in the Hire business last week.

The spring/summer season is crucial for the company, with weddings and social events like Ascot helping drive sales of formal suits. The inability to trade during this period will result in a “significant reduction in revenue and profitability” for the year ending January 30, it said on Monday.

“It’s moments like these that highlight the importance of staying connected and embracing the British resilience we’re known for -- we’ve been around since 1851 (and through two world wars) after all,” the company said in a statement.

“We pulled together then and we’ll pull together now. For our customers, for our colleagues, for each other.”

The Covid-19 pandemic finds the brand heading towards a period of transition. Earlier this month, the board announced the business could be returning to private ownership after agreeing a £22.6m deal with Brigadier to buy the company.
