MUJI to open in India in 2016

Published

Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., the parent company of MUJI, and Reliance Brands Limited have signed a joint venture to open MUJI stores in India. The company is expected to open a store in both Delhi and Mumbai by the middle of 2016.

MUJI

MUJI has had plans to open retail locations in the country since 2012, when the Indian government passed laws that allow for foreign companies to establish wholly-owned entities operating single-brand stores.

The company decided to partner with Reliance Brands, which operates other apparel and retail businesses in the country. Reliance Brands operates 100 stores for 18 international brands in India, including Kenneth Cole, Steve Madden, Diesel, and Brooks Brothers, among others.

The standalone MUJI stores will measure between 6,000 and 10,000 square feet and offer all of the brand's prducts. It currently cannot open MUJI cafes though, due to domestic regulations.
