Five beauty lessons from London Fashion Week

London always holds its own during fashion month when it comes to innovative beauty looks, and the Autumn/Winter 2017 catwalk cycle that wrapped up on Tuesday was no different. Here are five major lessons to take from the shows.

Color-changing hair dye is here
One beauty launch attracting a lot of attention was "Fire," a hair dye that changes color throughout the day by reacting with the temperature in the environment. Created by data visualization scientist Lauren Bowker as part of her experimental project "The Unseen," the product launched during London Fashion Week in collaboration with Storm Models.

Lip color: stain, don't paint
A softer approach will be in order next season when it comes to applying lip color. At shows including Preen, Roland Mouret and Temperley London, the models sported deep berry-toned hues smudged at the outer edges for a more whimsical, imperfect look than the painted-on lacquers we have seen over the past few seasons.

Eyeshadow: go square
We saw it in New York at Prabal Gurung's show, and the squared-off eyeshadow trend touched down in London, too, thanks to Versus Versace. The models sported geometric oblong bands of deep, bold shadow for a contemporary and slightly robotic look.

Ponytails are back
The humble ponytail once again found a place on the catwalk, thanks to brands ranging from the heritage label Burberry to the contemporary J.W. Anderson. While Burberry messed things up a bit and used product to add texture to its slightly rough-round-the-edge ponytails, Anderson opted for long and sleek, worn to the side and pulled over one shoulder.

Mind the gap
There was also a strong trend for ‘floating' eyeshadow, applied above the lash line for a slightly surreal look. Mary Katrantzou demonstrated this perfectly with delicate flicks of pastel shadow at the inner and outer corners of the eye.
