Cristina Trujillo, the chief executive officer of Spanish eyewear brand Etnia Barcelona, has left the company after less than two years at the helm.

Her departure is linked to the label’s latest ad campaign, which was pulled earlier this year after drawing criticism, sources close to the brand told FashionNetwork.com.

Etnia Barcelona, which regularly finds inspiration in the art world to create its campaigns, launched ‘A Bigger Splash’ in February to promote the Spring/Summer 2019 collection. The campaign inspired by David Hockney’s works was criticised for perpetuating sexist stereotypes by some, prompting the brand to pull the ad.

“By taking inspiration from David Hockney’s paintings, our intention was exactly the opposite: to exaggerate and even ridicule the stereotypes which have now been overcome by today’s society, although there is still much to be done,” the company said in a press release on Monday. It added “The damage is done. Now we can only remove the campaign and offer our sincere apologies to all those who were offended.”

Etnia Barcelona’s outgoing CEO Cristina Trujillo joined the company at the end of 2017 after spending more than a decade at Desigual. There, she had held several roles in wholesale, retail and franchises since 2006.

Etnia Barcelona was founded in 2000 by David Pellicer. Exports account for more than 90% of its revenues and it has offices in Barcelona, Miami, Hong Kong and Vancouver.
