The Chinese apparel tradeshow saw 108,164 professionals and visitors come together March 15-17, at the International Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. This latest edition welcomed 1,213 exhibitors through its door, with 400 firms coming from abroad representing 25 nationalities. Numbers were stable this year, after a 17% fall in traffic last March.

The tradeshow was once again able to count on the presence of large pavilions dedicated to French companies, with 'France Forever', and the Italians, who were the main foreign delegation. In addition, British, Greek, Danish, Spanish, Austrian, Canadian and Brazilian groups were also present, adding to the Peruvian, Japanese, Indians and the Turkish, the latter bringing an important supply of leather, furs and shoes.

The event, organised by China National Garment Association (CNGA), also benefitted from the neighbouring presence of the world's biggest gathering of fabric and materials, Intertextile, held next door in the impressive exhibition centre, as well as the yarns and fibres tradeshow, Yarn Expo.

In the meantime, all of these activities and appointments coincide at time of change for the Chinese textile industry. The industry is having to respond to the market with their offerings to meet the evolving local demand, which is notably under the influence of a new generation of customers in search of more technical and creative innovations.

"The priority in the (Chinese) textile and fashion industry is technical development, notably in response to the rise in labour costs," explains Chen Dapeng, Chic director and president of the CNGA, who adds that creativity is the key to the market.

"New designs reinforce demand and sustain desire; and fashion enriches cultural diversity. And a special interest can be found today in sustainable fashion that offers a high level of creativity."

The next edition of Chic will take place October 11 to 13, still inside the International Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai.
