Chanel entrusts creative direction to Virginie Viard
On the morning of Feb. 19, Karl Lagerfeld passed away. An iconic fashion industry heavyweight, the German designer set the tone at Chanel since he took up the reins at the famous rue Cambon fashion house in January 1983.
The label has opted for continuity, entrusting design to Karl Lagerfeld's righthand woman, Virginie Viard.
"Alain Wertheimer (Chanel co-owner) has decided to entrust Virginie Viard, director of Chanel's creative studio, with the design of its collections, to continue to uphold the legacies of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld," the label said in a press release.
Last month, it was Viard who greeted the public in the nave of Paris' Grand Palais, as the "Kaiser" of fashion had been unable to attend the house's two haute couture shows on the morning of Jan. 22. At the time, Chanel said that "Virginie Viard as creative studio director and Eric Pfrunder as Chanel’s director of image continue to work with him and follow through with the brand’s collections and image campaigns.”
Clearly, the long-standing team that has accompanied Lagerfeld is well-equipped to hold the fort.
