CeraVe is working on going vegan

CeraVe is the latest beauty brand to pivot towards veganism.

The prestige skincare brand is currently in the process of making its products more vegan-friendly in the US and Canada, with the goal of making its offerings more than 90 percent vegan by the year 2021, reports Allure. The label already sells animal product-free products in the UK and multiple other countries.

Currently, CeraVe products in North America feature a type of cholesterol derived from sheep's wool, but the brand hopes to replace this with a vegan version over the next few years.

"CeraVe offers vegan-friendly products in over 30 countries, [though] some formulas available in the United States and Canada today contain an important and beneficial ingredient, which is not vegan," a company spokesperson told Allure. "The brand's objective, however, is to replace it over time with a vegan-friendly substitute and further achieve its mission of therapeutic skin care for all."

The L'Oréal-owned label is the latest in a string of brands addressing the use of animal-based ingredients and animal testing in the manufacturing of their cosmetics, as vegan beauty becomes an increasingly important consumer-driven trend. Last year saw the home spa brand Bliss become officially certified as cruelty-free by animal rights organization PETA, while cult cosmetics brand Milk Makeup declared itself 100% vegan, after eliminating animal-based products such as honey, beeswax and collagen from its formulas. Research published last year by Grand View Research, Inc., estimated that the global vegan cosmetics market would reach USD 20.8 billion by the year 2025.
