Cartier postpones major exhibition in Milan’s Triennale due to coronavirus

Cartier has decided to postpone a major exhibition in Milan’s Triennale design museum, scheduled to open next month, in the latest delayed project in luxury and art since the outbreak of the coronavirus in Italy.

The Paris-based jeweller announced Tuesday that it was delaying the exhibition Les Citoyens: Uno squardo di Guillermo Kuitca sulla collezione della Fondation Cartier, or 'Citizens: A look by Guillermo Kuitca at the Cartier Foundation collection.'

“In view of the current situation regarding the spread of the Covid-19, the Fondation Cartier and Triennale Milano have decided to postpone the exhibition,” Cartier said in a press release. Instead, the opening in the Triennale, originally scheduled for April 11, will take place later this year, Cartier added, without naming a date.

Late Monday night, the Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte announced drastic measures to place the entire peninsula under lockdown in an attempt to prevent the rapid spread of coronavirus.

Previously, Giorgio Armani held his signature runway show behind locked downs in late February; while the Salone del Mobile, the world’s largest furniture and design salon, which is held annually in Milan, pushed back its next edition until June. And the Venice Architecture Biennale, the most prestigious architectural gathering, has pushed back its opening from May until late August.

Located inside central Parco Sempione, the Triennale is a major design and art museum built in the early 1930s. It has staged exhibitions by such diverse sources as Louis Vuitton and Ermenegildo Zegna or Mies van der Rohe and Pier Paolo Pasolini.

The Fondation Cartier is the first significant art foundation built by a major international luxury brand that is largely devoted to contemporary art. Founded in 1984, it has featured exhibitions by Jean Paul Gaultier, William Kentridge, Damian Pettigrew and Gérard Garouste.

Kuitca is a major Argentine artist, whose work integrates architecture, topography and geographical maps.
