Bluebuck launches men’s eco-swimwear made from recycled ocean plastic

Published
Jul 5, 2019

Eco-friendly products are key to any brand’s marketing message these days and it means any launch with an eco angle is bound to get more attention that it usually would.

The new eco-friendly Bluebuck men's swim shorts

The fact that London-based Bluebuck menswear is launching a range of swim shorts is newsworthy but not a huge headline-grabber in normal circumstances, yet when you add the sustainability element, it becomes very significant.

The company’s new offer is made from 100% recycled ocean plastic and 5% of all swimwear sales are being donated to the Marine Conservation Society.

The products, which sell at £75 (€88/$99), are available on the brand’s webstore and are made from Seaqual yarn, which is produced from plastic collected from the Mediterranean seabed by Spanish fishermen. This waste is then cleaned, sorted and recycled to produce the yarns.

The collection is inspired by the world of sailing and comes in eight different colour combinations and features the zigzag stitching that can be also found on sails and elements of the flags.

Bluebuck founder Pierre David said: “People are very aware of the global problem of chronic plastic pollution, which now sees 12 million of tons of plastic dumped in our seas and oceans every year. This is having a serious impact on marine life and our beaches. This matters to us and so we’re doing our bit by using this plastic waste as the raw material for our new swim range.

“When we discovered Seaqual and their yarns we saw an opportunity to partner up and make a real difference. By design, all our products are made to last longer, meaning less waste, but by using actual waste as our raw material we’ve taken things one step further.”

The new swim line continues the brand’s overall eco-focused approach that includes using certified organic cotton, produced in European factories powered by renewable energy sources and transported by road to ensure the lowest carbon footprint possible.
