Birkenstock in Jil Sander collab for 'life in nature' footwear line

With Birkenstock’s hot product status continuing, a new collaboration should only enhance the German footwear producer’s reputation further.

It’s teamed up with luxury label Jil Sander on a men’s and women’s shoe and sandal collection, designed by Jil Sander’s creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier 

The ‘life in nature’ Birkenstock x Jil Sander collection features four different models, including three redesigns and one new development. 

Those three existing models — the classic Arizona sandal, the heel-strapped Milano sandal, and the Berlin clog — have been reinterpreted “showing an exaggerated silhouette with a rounded, wider and higher profile and larger soles that create a strong look and a grounded footprint”. 

The new silhouette, the Velan, is a closed-toe clog with a wraparound ankle strap.

The colour palette is in clear, graphic, cream, olive and black.

The collection will be available exclusively on the Jil Sander, 1774 and Mytheresa webstores for a week from July 1. Then from July 8, the line moves into selected retailers and Jil Sander stores worldwide. As yet, there’s no information about prices.

"By harmonising the construction with the DNA and know-how of Birkenstock, the Meiers have found a synthesis between purpose and design, which gives the sandals, which have become icons of our time, a new spirit", Birkenstock said of its collab.

And Birkenstock CEO Oliver Reichert added that the Meiers “have given this important brand relevance and authenticity” and that was key when choosing to work together on the collab. “Together we have achieved what we always strive for - real novelty and product innovation”, he added.

Meanwhile, Lucie and Luke Meier also said they’e been “wearing Birkenstocks for as long as we can remember. They have accompanied us to some exceptionally beautiful places, from camping in the Canadian wilderness to sitting by the fireplace in the Swiss Alps. The quality and integrity of Birkenstock convinced us to work with them”.
