Birkenstock collaborates with Proenza Schouler

Birkenstock and NY womenswear brand Proenza Schouler have teamed up to reinvent two of the footwear brand’s signature styles.

BIRKENSTOCK

Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have given Birkenstock’s Arizona and Milano styles a designer makeover, reinterpreting the shoes with their label’s unique brand codes.

Inspired by utilitarian workwear and athletic footwear, McCollough and Hernandez have given the shoes Velcro closures rather than the usual hardware buckles. The styles are finished with industrial contrast topstitching, whilst the traditional silhouette of the sandals is retained.

“Birkenstock thrives on innovation and challenges that talents like Proenza Schouler bring to our products. Achieving the balance between respecting our core principles and values, whilst delivering new design propositions is what we look for in our partnerships,” said Oliver Reichert, chief executive officer of Birkenstock.

The shoes are made from polished, specchio calf leather derived from past and present Proenza Scholuer collections. The colour palette is timeless, featuring black, white, ochre and silver. It was not immediately clear on Wednesday if the creations will be included in any upcoming Proenza runway show.

The visual concept was developed by German photographer Jürgen Teller and art director Peter Miles, who have created a 3-D experience that embodies the designers’ artistic approach and the timelessness and craftsmanship of the German footwear brand.

The collection is expected to launch in selected retailers from February 2020.

“We are excited to be partnering with Birkenstock as we have been long-time admirers and devotees of the brand. We are also thrilled to be working on this exciting venture alongside Juergen and Peter. Birkenstock and Proenza Schouler both share a common respect and admiration for the craftsmanship and detailed work that goes into all of our products, and we are excited to celebrate these all-important qualities in our collaboration,” said Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, designers and founders of Proenza Schouler.
