It was late January 2011. At the end of Christian Dior Haute Couture show, John Galliano was being applauded by his public as he took his bow, which was to be his last. His appearances were always a highlight, but that was not all there was to it. Each time, his shows told a story that was mind-blowing, magical, original and creative. Dior named him creative director of the house in 1996 whilst simultaneously buying an 87% stake in his eponymous label, which also showed in Paris, and of which the shows and the clothes were also a sight to behold, like for example the Spring/Summer 2006 collection where he put on a show that starred a wide variety of people, emphasising the importance of human diversity. After having been accused of spouting racist and anti-Semitic remarks, the House of Dior decided to initiate a process of dismissal in the middle of Paris Fashion Week. And the question that is on everybody’s lips at the moment: What will become of John Galliano, one of the most genius and gifted designers of his generation?
