On Saturday 19th November, the first edition of the Milan furniture show’s 'Salone del Mobile.Milano in Shanghai' exhibition opened at the Shanghai Exhibition Center -- in the presence of Ivan Scalfarotto, under-secretary at the Italian Ministry for Economic Development, of ICE, the Italian Foreign Trade Agency and of Italian institutional representatives in China.

Salone del Mobile.Milano brought to the Chinese market for a 3-day event/exhibition a selection of 56 Italian companies, representing 'Made in Italy' excellence in premium manufacturing, including Artemide, B&B Italia, Calligaris, Dada, Fantoni, Flexform, Flou, Foscarini, Kartell, Minotti, Molteni & C. and Natuzzi.

"This event was created (...) after a prolonged period of analysis, to approach a market representing the country with the highest growth potential worldwide," stated Roberto Snaidero, the President of Salone del Mobile.Milano and of the Italian furniture manufacturers' employers association, FederlegnoArredo.

"China is increasingly looking for quality products, and in this kind of game we wish to play a leading role."

Exports to China by the Italian lighting systems, bathroom fixtures and bathroom and office furniture sectors grew by 22.9% on aggregate in the January-July 2016 period compared to the same period in 2015. As for domestic furniture, China ranks eighth among importers of 'Made in Italy' products (source: Centro Studi Federlegno Arredo Eventi).

Besides design and furniture brands, the exhibition also showcased a series of signature Italian lifestyle names, such as Ermanno Scervino and Panerai (fashion), Ferrari and Ducati (automotive) and Cà del Bosco, Illy and S.Pellegrino ( food & beverage).

The event also features master classes by renowned Italian architects Fabio Novembre, Massimo Iosa Ghini, Marco Romanelli and Tiziano Vudafieri, and a special session on design innovation and sustainability organised by Italian economic magazine Il Sole 24 Ore in partnership with its local counterpart, the China Economic Daily.

Finally, the event will also host an exhibition curated by architects Alessandro Colombo and Stefano Piontini, featuring the most striking works by 9 Italian architecture studios operating in Shanghai.

Salone del Mobile.Milano in Shanghai was organised in collaboration with the Italian Minister for Economic Development Carlo Calenda, with ICE, the Italian Foreign Trade Agency, with the Italian Ambassador to China Ettore Sequi and with the leading Italian institutions operating in China, and in partnership with trade show organiser BolognaFiere.
