Sino-American conflict over textile dumping

Published
Aug 25, 2009

The affair risks marking commerce between the USA and China: the U.S. International Trade Commission has voted to continue counter dumping cases on Chinese textile imports, with duties to combat dumping due in December.

“The United States International Trade Commission (ITC) today determined that there is a reasonable indication that a U.S. industry is threatened with material injury by reason of imports of narrow woven ribbons with woven selvedge from China that are allegedly subsidized and from China and Taiwan that are allegedly sold in the United States at less than fair value.”

After a unanimous decision by the commission, there will be an investigation into both anti-dumping measures as well as measures to curb countervailing. If, for the moment, China has not reacted to the decision of the American authorities, analysts on both sides of the Pacific agree that this could establish precedent for all future cases of suspected dumping.
