Redress Design Award announces 2018 finalists

11 designers from regions including Hong Kong, India and the UK have been announced as finalists for this year’s Redress Design Award, which aims to encourage the fashion industry to become more circular.

British designer Lynsey Gibson, who holds a BA in Fashion Knitwear from the University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins, will be representing the UK and is joined by Ganit Goldstein from Israel, Christian Jay Martin from the Philippines, Hung Wei-Yu from Taiwan, Lea Mose Svendsen from Denmark and Lucia Alcaina from Spain.

Jesse Hin Fung Lee from Hong Kong, Melissa Villevieille from France, Sarah Jane Fergusson from Japan,  Seerat Virdi from India and Tess Whitfort from Australia complete the list of finalists.

The sustainable fashion competition will see the finalists present their five-piece collections created from waste in a Grand Final show at HKTDC’s Centrestage fashion week in Hong Kong in September.

Redress Founder and Chairman Christina Dean commented, "For this Redress Design Award cycle, we scoured the world looking for the best emerging designers to tackle fashion’s underbelly - waste. With an estimated 92 million tons of textile waste generated annually - a truly staggering figure that is projected to increase to 148 million tons annually by 20301 – there is not a moment to lose as we passionately cultivate more fashion changemakers.

“Our search was rewarded; the designers are demonstrating the creative and commercial potential of the wide breadth of untapped textile waste streams from the fashion industry and beyond.”

The winner of Redress Design Award 2018 will create an upcycled collection for retail alongside new brand The R Collective, and a second winner will be chosen to receive professional mentorship with Orsola de Castro, the co-founder of Fashion Revolution.

The final moments of the competition will be also captured by a TV crew to product the third season of Frontline Fashion, the documentary co-produced by Redress and Mustard Creative.
