Miriam Ponsa and Txell Miras show the strength of women at 080 Barcelona Fashion

“The sea is tough but it represents freedom,” stated one of the female fishers who were the protagonists of Marta Solano’s documentary “Women of the sea,” a clip of which was shown prior to the runway show from Miriam Ponsa. It was part of a statement of intention from the designer know for her knitwear, who presented “Les dones del Mar,” one of the most interesting proposals to go down the runway.

The collection reclaimed the role of the strong working women, inspired by fishing communiites in which women play a fundamental part. The palette was imbued with colors of the sea like blue, white, gray and silver, while the designs were similarly inspired: from a coat with blue waves worn by international model Mayka Merino to the use of fishing nets. Asymmetrical patterns, relaxed combinations and natural materials like cotton, linen, silk and raffia accessoires characterized a collection that was equal to the tradeswomen it sought to promote.

Txell Miras, winner of the best collection in during the February 2016 presention, showed “Roccocont,” which was faithful to the label’s color palette, shifting between black, white and gray. The spring/summer 2018 collection redefined femininity with simple, relaxed designs.

During the morning was the debut of Mietis, showing pieces with a vintage flair, as did the swimwear brand Guillermina Baeza. Loa by Lidia Aguilera and an invitation to Barbados with the designs of Pablo Erroz, who was inspired by a colorful vacation and utilized materials from denim and cotton to satin. Jnorig’s debut “Two words opposed” deserves special mention, showing the designer’s previous work in the ateliers of Jeremy Scott and S.Oliver, with a sporty influence that invited us to think about sportswear or even the work of Yohji Yamamoto.

In the afternoon Lebor Gabala presented “Suddenly Summer,” a spring collection marked by floral prints and blues and greens that didn’t foreshadow the end of the day. The flamenco dancer Rafael Amargo presented his brand’s first runway show: Amoramargo, which, due to delays and a show lasting nearly an hour, nearly eclipsed the work of the day’s female artisans. Although it may not always seem so, not everything in fashion has value. Or at least, it shouldn’t.
