Glenn Martens to design the next Diesel Red Tag collection

Published
May 22, 2018

Diesel is turning 40 and the brand is celebrating with a slew of collaborations. Following in the footsteps of Shayne Oliver, creative director of the currently inactive Hood by Air label, who revealed ten looks for the first iteration of the Diesel Red Tag project this March, it's Glenn Martens' turn to create a collection for the Italian brand.

Since the departure of its creative director, Nicolas Formichetti, the OTB group's flagship brand has chosen to call in some of the highest profile designers of the moment. If further proof were needed of this strategy, Glenn Martens, who has been creative director at Y/Project since 2013, is also the winner of the 2017 ANDAM Award.

"This is a vibrant moment for Diesel: we are working on a series of global initiatives, one of which is this, with the most groundbreaking and radical international designers", explains Diesel founder Renzo Rosso in a release. "The new generations are excited and engaged by beautiful products that have a soul and speak the language of today." It's an idea that was already evoked by Rosso when he spoke to FashionNetwork.com in March, saying, "for many years, Diesel has been an innovative, striking brand. I want us to find our DNA once more, through the modernity of 2018."

Glenn Martens' work for Diesel Red Tag will be presented at an event planned for Milan Men's Fashion Week, which is set to take place from June 12 to 16. The business side of the collection will be managed by Tomorrow London Ltd.

This event will then, in effect, replace the now traditional Diesel Black Gold show. The brand did, however, explain that the spring-summer 2019 collection of its premium label will be displayed in a showroom setting for customers and stockists alike to view. When asked, Diesel Black Gold, which is distributed in a selection of the 400 Diesel stores around the world and operates a handful of boutiques under its own name, confirmed that Andreas Melbostad is still in charge of design at the label.
