Cherchbi blames rising costs as it announces closure

Leather goods and accessories brand Cherchbi is discounting items up to 40% as it prepares to close after struggling to make products affordable for the wider public.

Founder Adam Atkinson announced in a statement published on the site that the brand had decided to close down now "before ever-increasing pressure from rising costs and production inefficiencies become too great to bear".

Founded in 2007, the company prides itself on being one of the few British accessories brands to only use materials made in Britain, but its founder said there is “probably a good reason others don’t do this".

“Many have advised moving manufacture overseas or seeking investment to raise prices, and the brand, to a luxury level. No thanks. I’m very proud that Cherchbi has always been recognised for its honesty and integrity. Unfortunately, it simply isn’t possible to maintain this and make the goods affordable to a wider audience,” wrote Atkinson on the site.

The company develops its own Herdwyck No.10 wool tweed and has collaborated with Net-A-Porter, Selfridges and brands like Joseph Cheaney, John Smedley, Hardy Amies. It is also stocked by Dover Street Market.

Adam Atkinson said he will continue to work as a consultant with his Bag & Accessory Design studio providing insights and advice on topics including product development, sourcing, project and creative direction.
